An amusing piece aired on "20/20" this evening about this fellow John Engilmann (sp?) and his direct instruction techniques. I would suppose this guy must rank with our school's friend, John Saxon, for villification among reformers.
I'm interested in hearing more about this fellow. He teaches at the Univ. of Oregon.
BTW. The California Reading Taskforce, called by Supt. Delaine Eastin, took a strong position calling for a balanced reading program, telling teachers to bring their phonics out of the closet. The whole language folk took some real gas.
I'm curious. Do folks who dismiss the efficacy of standardized testing regarding mathematics dismiss testing of reading by standardized means? My experience in ed school led me to believe that reading levels are easily diagnosed.
