Michigan Gateways Program #403 ================================== Michigan Gateways Spotlight Review ================================== Beyond the Classroom
One of the most popular features of regular programs in the Michigan Gateways series, each Spotlight segment takes viewers on a visit to a classroom, staff development workshop, or other educational setting for scenes of reform taking place in Michigan math and science education.
Our Michigan Gateways Spotlight Review mini-series, featuring Spotlight segments from our previous three seasons of programming, concludes with a look Beyond the Classroom.
Reformed teaching and learning depends on a significant commitment from teachers, parents and students outside of the period between class hour bells. For this Spotlight Review program, we pulled together scenes of teachers, parents and students working beyond the classroom as mathematics and science education evolves in Michigan.
-- Lansing Kindergarten Teachers - Lansing Public Schools In this segment from our 1994 season, we dropped in on a meeting of kindergarten teachers as they worked to select new mathematics text materials. Lansing Public Schools mathematics consultant Liz Jones led the discussion. -- Michigan Operation Physics - Kalamazoo Operation Physics is a highly regarded workshop program that serves to update teachers on both science content and pedagogy. We visited a workshop of the Michigan chapter at Western Michigan University in the summer of 1993. -- Kids' College - Ingham County ISD and MSU This summer science program for gifted and talented students doubles as a professional development experience for teachers. We visited in 1993, and spoke with participating teachers. -- Averill Elementary School, Lansing; and Dexter Community Schools From the spring of 1995, this segment features a group of teachers from Dexter Community Schools on a visit to Averill Elementary School in Lansing to see one way mathematics education can be approached within a multi-age classroom. -- Longfellow Elementary School - Pontiac On "Family Math Fun Night" at Longfellow Elementary School, parents come in with their children for a hands-on orientation to today's reformed mathematics education. We visited in the winter of 1994. -- High School Honors Science Program - East Lansing Each summer, students from around Michigan go beyond the classroom and into the laboratory, as part of the High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State University. We originally featured this segment in the fall of 1994.
