Michigan Gateways Program #401 ================================== Michigan Gateways Spotlight Review ================================== For our Fall '95 broadcasts, we collected Spotlight segments from our previous three seasons of programming and put them together to create a special three-part mini-series: Gateways Spotlight Review.
One of the most popular features of regular programs in the Michigan Gateways series, each Spotlight segment takes viewers on a visit to a classroom, staff development workshop, or other educational setting for scenes of reform taking place in Michigan math and science education.
Our new season begins with MATH REFORM ACROSS THE GRADES, the first program in this mini-series, with a satellite broadcast on October 6, 1995. November's program will feature DISCOURSE IN MICHIGAN CLASSROOMS; the mini-series concludes with our December show, BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.
----------------------------- Math Reform Across the Grades ----------------------------- In this collection of Michigan Gateways Spotlight segments, six classroom scenes from kindergarten through high school provide a look at the ongoing reform of mathematics education in Michigan.
Dwight Rich Middle School - Lansing Jane Hannah-Smith's sixth grade class was one of the first classrooms featured on Michigan Gateways, back in the Spring of 1993. On the day we visited, students were learning about surface area and volume. Team teacher Elizabeth Jones taught the day's lesson.
Sturgis Middle School - Sturgis Early in our second season, we traveled to Sturgis for a look at sixth grade classes as teachers and students embarked on a new "untracked" middle school mathematics program. Teachers Ellen Eisele and Bill Dickey are featured.
Houghton Elementary School - Saline On this 1995 visit to Saline, we found fifth-graders reporting on interviews they had conducted with adults about their jobs. School Counselor Jane McKie teaches the Career Awareness lesson.
Edmonson Middle School - Ypsilanti/Willow Run Community Schools Students in sixth-grade classes taught here by Lori Brinkerhoff and Michael Munn were found using computer spreadsheets to compile data and create charts and graphs as part of their introduction to statistics.
Mason High School - Mason In Carol Thomas's Algebra I and Pre-Calculus classes at Mason High School, students use calculators and work in groups -- even when the day's activity is a quiz.
Carpenter Elementary - Ann Arbor Our second season of programming included this visit to Eileen Donegan's kindergarten and Gwen Phelps' first grade classes, where these teachers use alternative assessment strategies for monitoring day-to-day progress of students.
