The June/July 2004 issue of the AMS NOTICES
http://www.ams.org/notices/200406/200406-toc.html
contains two letters concerning the flimflam article by Anthony Ralston. The first by Rick Norwood refers to our "Booooooorrrrrrring!" courses. This is no surprise to those of us who have spent extensive time examining our junk books, which contain mindless review material for the first three or four months of every grade.
The second by Ulf Persson questions whether "research in mathematical education" can be described as "scientific." It is possibly just as "scientific" as the "scientific socialism" that the stalinists claimed to be implementing, an analogy that has been made by some emigrants from the former Soviet Bloc.
The letters can be read by scrolling down after the Opinion piece by Johnny W. Lott.
