TANGRAMS WEB UNIT - TOM SCAVO

http://forum.swarthmore.edu/trscavo/tangrams.html

Tangrams help develop spatial-visualization skills, and
may also be used to introduce or reinforce geometric
concepts such as congruency, similarity, and symmetry.
This unit for grades 4-6 uses tangrams to find the areas
of polygons without employing formulas. Students construct
their own tangrams, find the areas, and learn to calculate
the area of any polygon made from tangrams.

The Math Forum is committed to being a resource built
upon the activity of the teachers, students, and
researchers who use it. We continue to experiment with
the use of the Web for instruction and with involving
Forum users in the creation of materials for this enormous
Internet classroom. Teacher Tom Scavo's Tangrams unit is
one example; you will find links to others on our Web
Units page:
