The board of the Adult Numeracy Network wishes to inform list members of two professional development opportunities that are being planned for April, 2004. At first glance, it may seem as if the scheduled events conflict, but the first day of COABE will be devoted to pre-sessions with the general session opening on the 25th.

The annual conference of the Commission on Adult Basic Education will be held in Columbus, Ohio, on April 24-28. We are trying to generate proposals for presentations about adult numeracy research, practice, or administration so that the planners can arrange a coherent strand of sessions devoted to the topic. The deadline for proposals is this Saturday, Nov 15, so time is short. However, if you cannot meet the deadline exactly, submit your proposal as soon as possible and hope for a little leeway. When you do submit a numeracy-related proposal, please send the title and abstract to as well so that we can coordinate with the conference planners. The presentation proposal forms and more information about the conference are available online at

ANN Annual Meeting
The Adult Numeracy Network will hold its annual meeting and institute in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, April 24 in conjunction with the NCTM conference. It will be held in the meeting rooms of the Mayors Commission on Literacy, located near the NCTM Conference site. This meeting is designed to be valuable for both experienced and novice numeracy teachers across the spectrum of adult education from ABE/GED to developmental college programs. The preliminary schedule, call for proposals (due Jan 20, 04), and registration forms will be posted soon at and will be included in the next issue of The Math Practitioner.

We hope for record participation this year in these events so register early!
