FWIW, FYI, we've solved the problem!

Mainly she did it :) [a psychologist pseudo-statistician speaking with
admiration of a trained mathematician]. I just found some helpful recent
materials on the web by Dickman & Hakulinen, including Stata code.
Reproduction of their published estimates perfect.

Admittedly though, I was somewhat bemused to see no replies. A thread of
posts all by the same person looks rather pitiful ... But hey, I guess I
deserve it, plus what matters is that the tasks has been completed.
