Happy holiday everyone!

I have two questions.

1. Has anyone succeed in saving the plotting output into a file in
data format? (not graphic). Say, I have a function f(x) and let the
maple to plot it in a region with 50 points; and now I'd like to save
these 50 pairs of points (x,y) in a file in 50 rows x 2 columns.

2. I'd like to define a step function which may be plotted by maple.
This is a simple example.
>u:= proc(x,y) if x<3 then x+y else x^2+y^2 fi; end;

Now if I do
>u(1,2);
3
>u(5,1);
26
Seems no problem, but if I do
>plot(u(x,1), x=0..5);
Error, (in u) cannot evaluate boolean

Any insight will be appreciated.
