[Note: From the AMTE listserve ... expanded just a little]

Here's a list of some of the things that have been proposed to explain
poor scholastic performance in the U.S.:

prenatal care
nutrition
traditional curricula
new curricula
leaky roofs
peer groups
old books
new books
students are not serious
teacher preparation
teacher's unions
standards
teaching procedures (mechanical)
genetics
teachers need time
teaching methods
lack of technology
using technology
peers
divorce rates
single parents
two shift parents
education courses
parental socio-economic status
television
class size
videogames
drugs
sex
violence
child abuse
pornography
music
calculators
college/university mathematics courses

Maybe lots of these things correlate with poor performance and
reasonable arguments about causality can be made for some of them.
Is EXPECTATIONS the thing that is missing from the list that seems
to be quite important?
