NPD Online Research Reports Students Mining the Net for Homework

Port Washington, N.Y.--August 17, 1999--For school age children, computers
aren't just for fun, according to a new survey from NPD Online Research.
The firm reports that two out of three children who have a computer at home
use it to do homework. Eighty-five percent of those students also use the
Internet at home to complete school assignments.

However, students going online usually don't go it alone, NPD reports.
According to parents, who completed the survey, most student activity on
the Internet is monitored. Three quarters of parents surveyed reported they
play an active role in helping their children complete homework assignments
on the Web.

On an average night, most children finish up to one hour of schoolwork
using a home PC, with half an hour spent online, according to the study.
Although children most frequently used the computer at home for special
reports and research, home PCs fulfilled a variety of school-related needs
for students.

. School-Related Activities That Children Used Computers For At Home Special
reports 88%
. Reference source 85%
. Educational software programs 54%
. Nightly homework 50%
. Communicate with school friends 43%
. Standard test preparation (SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc.) 13%

"There are so many educational resources available online and off, it's not
surprising that computers are being used for homework," explained Pamela
Smith, vice president of NPD Online Research. "The fact that 73% of parents
confirmed that their children are using a computer at school might be
encouraging home computer use. Parents are realizing that computers and the
Internet can be an important part of their child's education."

As a study aid, survey respondents gave the Web high marks. According to
the survey, 19% of children always found information online for their
assignments. Another 65% located information most of the time, while 17%
retrieved something appropriate some of the time. Few children signed off
of the Web empty handed, as only 1% rarely found anything.

Most children shared the computer they used for schoolwork at home with
others. Many shared with family members as 85% of students used the family
PC to complete schoolwork at home. Only 15% of children did homework on
their own computer. This number should increase, according to NPD Online
Research. Among parents polled whose children used the family PC,
one-quarter intend to buy a new computer for their child within the next
six months.

About the Study

The NPD back-to-school computer use survey was conducted as part of the NPD
Online Research omnibus survey. Two thousand, one hundred and forty-three
individuals from NPD's Online Panel, a Web representative sample of
individuals prerecruited to participate in surveys, responded to the
questionnaire in early August. The NPD online omnibus survey gives
marketers the opportunity to share survey costs in order to monitor
consumer attitude and behavior on a wide range of topics.
