Application Deadline Sept. 20 for National Research Council?s TIMSS Convocation

The National Research Council?s Center for Science, Mathematics, and
Engineering Education will hold a convocation this fall for science and
mathematics educators who are committed to using results from the Third
International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to improve instruction
and learning. The convocation will run from Nov. 19 - 21 at the National
Academy of Sciences building in Washington, D.C. Interested teams and
individuals must apply by Sept. 20.

A Research Council committee -- chaired by Mel George, former president of
the University of Missouri and St. Olaf College -- will soon release a
comprehensive report on TIMSS results and a companion
professional-development guide. Convocation participants will receive
both. The report focuses on ways educators can use TIMSS data to inform
school-based and districtwide improvement efforts in areas such as
curriculum development, instruction, and system support. The
professional-development guide outlines a variety of workshops to help
teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders understand the TIMSS data
and methodologies and initiate local planning activities.

The November convocation is part of a special project funded by the U.S.
Department of Education. The event will feature a workshop based on the
professional-development guide; two dinner sessions, with presentations by
TIMSS researchers; a poster session featuring educators who have used TIMSS
data to improve mathematics and science instruction; and networking and
planning sessions.

Participants will include teams of teachers, administrators, and
policy-makers from schools and districts that have begun an improvement
process, or are committed to doing so in the immediate future. Others will
be selected on the basis of their professional development positions,
experience, and ability to conduct future workshops using project materials.

There is no registration fee. Lunch and dinner meals will be provided, but
participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging
costs. Selected hotels will offer reduced rates. To receive an
application form or more details, contact the Research Council at
TIMSS@nas.edu, by e-mail, or call (202) 334-1273. The mailing address:
