"Fuzzy Math" To Be Focus of Wednesday Hearing

Washington - Two subcommittees of the Committee on Education and the
Workforce will hold a hearing this week on the "Federal Role in K-12
Mathematics Reform." The hearing will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February
2, in 2175 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will be co-chaired
by Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early
Childhood, Youth, and Families, and Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon (R-CA),
Chairman of the Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training, and
Life-Long Learning.

The hearing will focus on 10 mathematics programs that the U.S. Department
of Education recently identified as exemplary. A number of nationally
recognized mathematics scholars publicly expressed concern about the
quality of many of these programs. The hearing will examine the process
and input that went into the selection of the programs, as well as the role
the federal government should play in improving mathematics instruction in
