midpow "California Dreaming" extension

Hi
When I wrote this problem I was very pleased with myself for having
thought of the "clever" bonus question. After all it includes a bit
of web work (using mapquest) and a little geography (listing the
states).
About halfway through the week I realized that I missed a more
important math question that I could have used for the bonus! Do you
know what it is? Did you actually include it when you worked this
problem with your students?
Here is what I should have asked:
What is the average speed over the entire imaginary trip?
Answer: 58.947.... or about 59mph
Do you agree with that? Check my calculations.
I hope that you will use this extension when you review the problem
with your students.
