Using PoWs and improving standardized testing! Any possible connection?

Hi,
My name is Roya Salehi and I work at the Math Forum, which as you know hosts Problems of the Week(PoW). From time to time, we hear from teachers who say, "We are preparing for the standardized tests, particularly the newer open-ended questions, and the PoW should help with that."
I am curious to learn about why teachers see such a connection between using PoWs and improving standardized testing. If there is a possible connection, it would be useful to first form a proper hypothesis and then conduct some research based on that.
Do you notice any connection, similarity or correlation? If so, how?
To help me form the initial hypothesis, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this issue either on pow-teach or through email <roya@mathforum.com>.
Thank you in advance for your help with this endeavor.
