Hi everyone, I ran across a great article in the current (April,
2001) Mathematics Teacher from NCTM about the challenges and
instructional stategies for teaching and learning mathematical
symbolism. While it is written for secondary teachers, I think it's
of value to upper elementary math teachers, too. Some of POW
discussions have concerned the connection between reading and writing
to communicate mathematical ideas, and math vocabulary and
explanations that demand precise mathematical language and symbols,
so this article comes at a good time. I hope others find it helpful.
