According to http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/%7Ehistory/HistTopics/Mathematical_games.html (where you can find a picture of a magic square) Magic squares involve using all the numbers 1, 2, 3, ..., n to fill the squares of an n x n board so that each row, each column, and both main diagonals sum to the same number. They are claimed to go back as far as 2200 BC when the Chinese called them lo-shu.
