It is New Year's Day, and Alan's birthday was yesterday:

   Dec 30  last year     27       (day before yesterday)
   Dec 31  last year     28       (yesterday)
   Jan 1   this year     28       (today)
   Dec 31  this year     29
   Dec 31  next year     30       ("sometime" next year)
