What is a "quadratic function"?

A quadratic function is one where the highest exponent of the 
independent variable is 2.  (The x variable is squared)  Some 
examples:

 y = 3x^2 - 2x + 1    or y = -5x^2 + 4x -3

In general y = ax^2 + bx + c is a quadratic function, where a, b, and 
c are real numbers.
