Opposite Point on a GlobeDate: 11/08/1999 at 19:49:35 From: Rachel Kohrumel Subject: Geography What is the farthest place on earth from Atlanta, Georgia? Date: 11/09/1999 at 10:32:38 From: Doctor Rick Subject: Re: Geography Hi, Rachel. The farthest place on earth from any point is the place exactly opposite it on the globe. Can you find the latitude and longitude of Atlanta? If so, then you can find the latitude and longitude of the opposite place. Then you can look up this place in an atlas or on a globe. Here is how to find the latitude and longitude of this place. The latitude of Atlanta is some number of degrees NORTH of the equator. The latitude of the opposite place is that same number of degrees SOUTH of the equator. The longitude takes a little more work. The longitude of Atlanta is some number of degrees WEST of the Greenwich meridian (the north-south line that passes through Greenwich, England). Take this number and SUBTRACT it from 180 degrees. The longitude of the place opposite Atlanta is this number of degrees EAST of Greenwich. - Doctor Rick, The Math Forum http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ |
