How many gallons are in a barrel?

Be careful, because there are many different sizes of barrels out
there! According to the New York Public Library Desk Reference, a
standard barrel (in the United States) is 31.5 gallons. A barrel of
oil is 42 gallons. Just because something is stored in a barrel,
though, doesn't say anything about how big the barrel is.
