Date: 11/07/2002 at 08:37:08 From: Doctor Jerry Subject: Re: Square numbers Hi Brendan, * * * * So, 4 is a square number, because 2 times 2 is 4. * * * * * * * * * So, 9 is a square number, because 3 times 3 is 9. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * So, 16 is a square number, becasue 4 times 4 is 16. 12 is not a square number. However, there is a decimal number whose square is 12. It is about 3.4641. If you multiply 3.4641 by 3.4641 you will get 11.99998881, which is quite close to 12. - Doctor Jerry, The Math Forum http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ |
