Hi Daniel - thanks for writing to Dr. Math.

Let's look at the smaller number: 6 hrs. 45 min. Think of this as 6:45 
or 45 minutes after six o'clock.

How long will it take to get to the next whole hour, seven o'clock 
(7:00)?  

   15 more minutes, right?

How long is it from 7:00 to 9:02?  

   2 hours, 2 minutes.  

Add the 15 minutes to the 2 hours, 2 minutes and you'll have an 
answer.

It's easiest to do these problems looking at an analog clock. Here's a 
picture of one, in case all of your clocks are digital:
