Nine Chickens, Ten DaysDate: 02/26/2002 at 20:33:10 From: Gewel Subject: Algebra II If a chicken and a half lays an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will nine chickens lay in ten days? Date: 02/27/2002 at 01:43:56 From: Doctor Ian Subject: Re: Algebra II Hi Gewel, Let's start from the fact that 1 1/2 chickens will lay 1 1/2 eggs in 1 1/2 days Then twice the chickens will lay twice the eggs in the same amount of time: 3 chickens will lay 3 eggs in 1 1/2 days And those same chickens will lay twice the eggs in twice the time: 3 chickens will lay 6 eggs in 3 days And they'll lay 1/3 the eggs in 1/3 the time: 3 chickens will lay 2 eggs in 1 day And so on. Can you take it from here? - Doctor Ian, The Math Forum http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ |
