  1. Learning and Mathematics - Math Forum
Newsgroup discussions among mathematicians, math teachers, and students of educational psychology on the Math Forum's newsgroup geometry-pre-college, inspired by recent work on how students learn mathematics. With five related annotated bibliographies. more>>

  2. Learning & Mathematics Discussion Sessions - Math Forum
Newsgroup discussions inspired by recent work on how students learn mathematics among mathematicians, teachers of mathematics, and students of educational psychology that occurred on the Math Forum's newsgroup geometry.pre-college. Much of the work around ideas that form the basis of the NCTM Standards indicates that the traditional classroom needs to be changed if more effective learning (learning that is more conceptual and less formulaic) is to take place. Summaries of articles posted to the group include implications for classroom practice. Annotated bibliographies include: Alternative Instruction and Alternative, Performance-Based Assessment; Cross-Age Tutoring; Girls' Attitudes, Self-Expectations, and Performance in Math; Limited English Proficiency Students and Mathematics; Mathematics and Motivation. more>>

  3. Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) - University of Pittsburgh
A multidisciplinary research center whose mission is to understand and improve learning by children and adults in the organizational settings in which they live and work: schools, museums and other informal learning environments, and workplaces. Fields of research include: Processes of Learning; Learning in Schools and Museums; Policy research; Outreach and Implementation; Learning and Technology; and Learning and Work. more>>

  4. MathEduc Database - ZDM
MathEduc (formerly MATHDI) is the only international reference database offering a world-wide overview of literature on research, theory and practice in mathematics education. MathEduc also covers education in computer science on the elementary level. The scope includes literature for all school levels up to university education, teacher education, general and vocational education. About 500 journals from all over the world are evaluated as well as books and teaching material. MathEduc is edited by Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM), The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), and Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe in cooperation with Editorial Unit Debrecen Zentralblatt MATH, Hungary; ERIC, USA; FIZ Bildung, Germany; GPNTP, Russia; Pädagogische Fakultät Karls-Universität Prague, Czechia; PUBLIMATH, France; SANU, Serbia; SEIEM, Spain. more>>

  5. TeachingWorks
Establishing a "professional system for the training of teachers" through "a common curriculum for professional training that focuses on high-leverage practices and on the subject-matter knowledge needed for teaching; performance assessments of teachers' readiness; supporting the learning of those who teach, coach, and mentor teachers; and making available information and data about teaching and ways to support the development of skillful instructional practice." The organization runs a streaming seminar series as well as elementary mathematics laboratory class sessions, often taught by TeachingWorks' director Deborah Loewenberg Ball, dean of the University of Michigan School of Education. Download PDFs of conference presentations such as "Building a Practice-Focused Teaching" and "Great Teachers Aren't Born. They're Taught." TeachingWorks grew out of the Teacher Education Initiative (TEI) at the University of Michigan (U-M). more>>

  6. Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) - Math Forum
The Math Forum's page of resources on the TIMSS study. Initial findings, NCTM response, and more. more>>

  7. TIMSS United States: International Mathematics and Science Study - U.S. TIMSS National Research Center, Michigan State University
The Third International Mathematics and Science Study represents the most extensive investigation of mathematics and science education ever conducted. Approximately 50 countries participated in this comparative survey of education focusing upon 9-year-old and 13-year-old students, and students in their last year of secondary school. The US TIMSS site offers papers and publications, a newsletter, press releases, overheads, and the database files for the International Curriculum Analysis Database, which may be downloaded by country. more>>

  8. Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) - School of Education, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison
One of the oldest and largest education research centers in the world, providing an environment where some of the country's leading scholars conduct basic and applied education research. The WCER roster includes nearly two dozen research centers and projects currently investigating topics germane to education, including the Diversity in Mathematics Education (DiME) Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT), an integrated program to develop and enhance the instructional workforce from kindergarten through graduate school. more>>

  9. Writings from the MegaMath Project (MegaMath) - Casey, Fellows, Koblitz; Los Alamos National Laboratory
Documents containing classroom materials and discussions of mathematics pedagogy. The Los Alamos workbook; Lessons for math teachers; An hour in the classroom; Literacy lessons and mathematics learning; Computer science in elementary school; Combinatorially based cryptography for children; Classroom structures for human development. more>>
