    Establishing a "professional system for the training of teachers" through "a common curriculum for professional training that focuses on high-leverage practices and on the subject-matter knowledge needed for teaching; performance assessments of teachers' readiness; supporting the learning of those who teach, coach, and mentor teachers; and making available information and data about teaching and ways to support the development of skillful instructional practice." The organization runs a streaming seminar series as well as elementary mathematics laboratory class sessions, often taught by TeachingWorks' director Deborah Loewenberg Ball, dean of the University of Michigan School of Education.     The Third International Mathematics and Science Study represents the most extensive investigation of mathematics and science education ever conducted. Approximately 50 countries participated in this comparative survey of education focusing upon 9-year-old and 13-year-old students, and students in their last year of secondary school.
