|From Critical issues in mathematics. National educational standards are being developed in nearly all subject areas. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has recently developed standards for mathematics; its Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics reflect a concern that students in the U.S. are not mathematically literate and often fail to see the relation between mathematics learned in school and real-life situations.
