Elementary: Measurement

At the elementary level, students in grades 3-5 learn appropriate units for measuring length, area, weight, volume, size of angle, time, and temperature, and the appropriate tools for measuring these attributes. They learn the importance of measuring using standard units, become familiar with standard units in the customary and metric systems, and learn to do simple unit conversions (inches to feet, etc.) within a system of measurement. They also learn how measurements are approximations, and how differences in units affect precision.

Problems that allow elementary students to practice measurement, including dates and time, temperature, and terms and units of measure, are listed below. They address the NCTM Measurement Standard for Grades 3-5: understanding measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement, and applying appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.

For background information elsewhere on our site, explore the Elementary Terms and Units of Measurement area of the Ask Dr. Math archives. To find relevant sites on the Web, browse and search Measurement in our Internet Mathematics Library; to find elementary sites, go to the bottom of the page, set the searcher for late elementary level (3-5), and press the Search button.
