Elementary Statistics: Data Analysis

Elementary students in grades 3-5 learn to formulate questions that can be answered by collecting, organizing, and displaying relevant data, and how to select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze the data they collect. They use tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs, and explore the differences in representing categorical and numerical data. They draw conclusions and make predictions that based on data, and design studies for further investigations.

Elementary Problems of the Week that approach questions from a statistical point of view are listed below. They address the NCTM Data Analysis and Probability Standard for Grades 3-5.

To find relevant sites on the Web, browse and search Statistics in our Internet Mathematics Library; to find elementary sites, go to the bottom of the page, set the searcher for late elementary level (3-5), and press the Search button.
