| A classic math puzzle: given a balance scale and 12 coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs less or more than the other coins, determine the counterfeit in 3 weightings, and tell if it is heavier or lighter. Extensions to other cases and the general form of the problem. Alternative solutions by Tom Maglierygry, Martin Gardner, Frank Cole, and Barry Wolk; and some variations that were posted to rec.puzzles. | |
