|A database on the people and the economy of the US for each state and county from 1790 to 1970. Data include historical census figures and general population characteristics such as "number of free white females," "number of free colored males," and "number of female slaves"; and also statistics on American education and literacy, libraries, employment and labor, farming and agriculture, retail and wholesale businesses, manufacturing, housing, place of birth, native- and foreign-born population, race and ethnicity, and churches and relgions. This site is made available with the cooperation and consent of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), in Ann Arbor, Michigan.|
