Data include historical census figures and general population characteristics such as "number of free white females," "number of free colored males," and "number of female slaves"; and also statistics on American education and literacy, libraries, employment and labor, farming and agriculture, retail and wholesale businesses, manufacturing, housing, place of birth, native- and foreign-born population, race and ethnicity, and churches and relgions. This site is made available with the cooperation and consent of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
