Description: Barcodes are used with various encodings all over the world to simplify product identification, especially in retail. The site explains the most popular encodings, like UPC (Universal Product Code), ISBN (Intenational Standard Book Number), and EAN-13 (formerly an European standard), and provides several Java tools that simulate the encodings. Each encoding includes a safeguard algorithm to help avoid common misprints and misreadings. The algorithms serve as a nice application of modular arithmetic.
