Thoughts on the controversial question of using calculators in the classroom, and the author's belief that even a broken calculator may have its uses: the elementary mathematics curriculum may emphasize any or all of the paperandpencil, mental, or technologybased skills. The technological wonder of the broken calculator, while helping accustom children to new technology, fosters their mental skills, which the author believes to be the most valuable of the three... An interactive column for MAA Online that uses a Java applet to simulate a puzzle or mathematical problem, one not stated directly since the applet is intended to be such that the right answer to an as yet unstated problem should be easy to surmise.
