| Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications | |
| Products developed in print, video, and multimedia formats, supporting the NCTM Standards. College undergraduate resources include real world mathematics texts and resources in print, video, software, and student contests. Products: Principles and Practices of Mathematics - A first course that teaches mathematics as a subject much broader than calculus. Against All Odds: Inside Statistics - An introductory statistics course that uses PBS video and a text to demonstrate how data analysis is used in today’s world. For All Practical Purposes A liberal-arts mathematics text and PBS video series where students learn that mathematics is a tool used by professionals in a wide range of jobs. Algebra: In Simplest Terms - A PBS video course where students use real data and actual problems to learn introductory algebra. The UMAP Library on CD-ROM - A collection of over 400 undergraduate units that teach mathematical ideas in the context of real-world problems in music, history, biology, physics and marketing, for learning mathematics from pre-algebra to numerical analysis. Services: Intermath A project to develop interdisciplinary curricula at selected universities around the country. Contests: Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) - Teams of three undergraduates work together over a weekend to solve modeling problems. MathServe - A contest where teams of undergraduates work with a faculty advisor to develop innovative solutions to community problems using mathematics and skills from other disciplines. | |
