Collaborations
From Math and Art
My special interest began as I was looking for collaborators for a Math Image project I've had in mind for 3 years now. The basic idea is that one has a whole batch of images related to mathematics--images from art, culture, science, math--and these images can be presented to a viewer in different ways, e.g. flowing by screensaver-like. If a viewer clicks on an image they are taken to a wiki page containing explanations of the math and the image--explanations at a variety of levels and even interactive when possible. It would be a valuable experience for undergraduates to construct and write explanations (hence I have a CCLI proposal submitted) and the resulting Math Image site has wonderful educational possibilities at all levels (hence I'm looking around for funding directed at this!)
- There is a pre-wiki "pre-prototype" site is at http://mathforum.org/%7Eswatimage/Home.htm, and you need to sign on with username: imagemath, password: images. since I don't have permissions for most things yet. It doesn't work or look good with some browsers, but Firefox and Safari seem ok (providing you're not running under Linux). The moving image in the center sometimes takes a while to load.
This summer my students are constructing the Math Image Wiki, in addition to the Math & Art Wiki, and will soon begin sending out to obtain author's permission some basic pages containing image and information culled from the author's website. Some of you will likely be hearing from them! Gene
