Open-Ended Problems and Performance Tasks: Development and Assessment

This session has a dual purpose. First, participants will engage in solving open-ended problems and performance tasks. Characteristics of good mathematical tasks will be discussed. Second, participants will discuss and develop appropriate alternative assessment tools for the tasks. These tools will include checklists, analytic scales, and holistic scoring rubrics. The assessment tools developed will then be used to assess samples of student work. The intent of the session is for participants to engage in the entire process from instruction to assessment. Appropriate technologies and manipulatives will be used. Materials will be shared.
