NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

The assessment materials and activities to be shared in this workshop are drawn from the NSF-funded Connected Geometry project at EDC. The project is developing innovative and flexible curriculum materials for secondary mathematics that focus on geometry. Our aim is to make connections between geometry and other areas of mathematics, and develop students' mathematical ways of thinking, what we call, mathematical habits of mind. Focusing on mathematical habits of mind as an important and useful goal in mathematics learning within curriculum materials implies changes for assessment practices. In this session, participants will:
- work with one or more activity from the Connected Geometry materials;
- discuss the mathematics to be assessed and review some assessment activities;
- review student work from the activity;
- engage in a discussion of the teacher support needed in curriculum materials for teachers engaging in alternative assessments practices.
