This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.
By examining the similarities of the fields of mathematics and poetry, the need for aesthetic criteria in mathematics is identified. Jerry King's criteria are then presented, together with illustrative examples. The implications of these criteria for mathematics education are commented upon.
