This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.
Tom Snyder, educator, author, software designer and creator of the Fizz & Martina series, will share his research and theories on how crucial storytelling is to the learning process. The use of narrative in the math classroom has been limited in the past to word problems. Tom will share his breakthrough on how story can be used in more powerful ways to present math concepts to children. He will also show how teachers can use these stories to promote the use of natural language among students to explain their mathematical problem solving. Through the use of real storytelling and natural language and discussion teachers can inspire a lifelong comfort with numbers and math.
