Becoming Well-Prepared to Teach: Mathematics Preparation for Elementary Teachers

Question for Discussion: "What math experiences should prospective elementary teachers have?" A task force of math teacher educators has attempted to describe in a suggested guidelines document the essential math learning experiences (different from and in addition to the curriculum in the elementary math methods courses) which will help prepare pre-service elementary teachers to be effective elementary math teachers. This document is in the final draft stages and the task force is looking for suggestions and feedback with respect to these essential learning experiences. Copies of the document will be distributed and participants will share ideas about experiences and the university's role in providing them. Ideas and formats for model mathematics courses will be solicited.
