There is currently a raging debate as to whether certain dinosaurs, now recognized as different species, were merely different developmental stages of single species.

See: Triceratops may not be Torosaurus after all

Comparison

Triceratops

  • Solid neck frill

Both

  • Ceratopsians
  • Three facial horns
  • Quadrupedal
  • Herbivorous

Torosaurus

  • One hollow on either side of neck frill

Repercussions for Dinosaur Diversity

If certain dinosaurs were indeed merely different developmental stages of a single species, then the biodiversity of dinosaurs would have been much less than our current predictions.

List of Dinosaurs to Which This Possibly Applies

Mature Triceratops = Torosaurus
Juvinile Dracorex = Stygimoloch
Mature Stygimoloch = Pachycephalosaurus

Stegosaurus Applet
