Reorganizing New User Guide


Writing Goals

We want our image pages to have an attractive image, together with discussions of the math behind it that can be satisfying to users with many different levels of background. Start out with a very simple overview, likely hiding much of the more advanced material to keep from overwhelming readers (in particular going very light on equations). We've found it useful to keep the names of hidden subsections visible, serving as a come-on, but hiding the subsection contents (although maybe showing an intriguing image or so).

In general use short paragraphs of just a couple sentences, and simple sentences.

It's a real challenge to write clearly, simply, and still convey the mathematical concepts. Almost everyone needs to have their work read by others and to revise.

If there are parts of the mathematics you don't understand, 'fess up and leave it for people who know to finish (maybe yourself later on). Either label "A detailed explanation of XXX is needed here" or make an empty page A detailed explanation of XXX


Choosing an Image

Be as sure as you can that the image is not copyright -- see the link GNU Free Documentation License 1.2 at the bottom of each wiki page.

There are many appropriate candidate images on the web. As explained in the About section, in 2005 a group of students went on a surfing expedition and made a database of the interesting images they found. There is still good material in Image Database. Feel free to both use and to add interesting images you find.

A very useful direction to go for page choices: As a step in preparation for the work during the summer of 2009, several math faculty were asked what mathematics in elementary college courses do students find particularly difficult. This has lead to the Hard Math collection, which you should feel free to consider and to add to!
