(03/26/97) ************************************* MathMagic Cycle 24: Level 4-6 Regular ************************************* Balancing Act A rich eccentric relative died and left your team 200 gold coins, and some strange instructions in the will: using only a two plate balance, you are to find the one coin among them that is made of lead and only gold coated to look like the rest. The catch is that each time you use the balance you have to give the executor of the will five gold coins. Since you and your team members want that money for college, how would you go about weighing the coins to keep the most? How many coins is that? ************************************** MathMagic Cycle 24: Level 4-6 Advanced ************************************** New Outfits for a Whole Year While visiting my son at college and hearing his complaints about "not enough money to buy clothes" I realized by looking in his closet that he had enough shoes, pants and T-shirts to combine so that he could go to class every day for a year wearing a different attire!!! If he has twice as many pants as shoes, and three-halves as many T-shirts as pants, can you and your NTP find out how many of each he has? (perhaps you should also think of a counter-argument in case your folks use this on you... HINT: "Sure dad" doesn't cut it ;-) Remember to write down your steps and conclusions. ============================ Good luck MrH
