A Couple of "Real" Problems 

1) One day it was raining after school. Ana and her brother,
   Ben, had to go two blocks to get home from school. Ana decided
   to run home from school to get there faster. But Ben walked
   because he felt if you run you will hit more of the raindrops as
   they come down and so you will get wetter. What do you think?
   Who will be wetter when they get home--Ana or Ben? Draw pictures
   if you want and explain your answer. 

2) From Monday through Thursday, Sylvia ran 15 miles. She ran every 
   day except for Wednesday. How many miles did he run on each day?

MEASURING UP!

EXERCISE I 
   Billie drew a line. She then put two points (dots) on
   the line and labelled them A and B. She measured the distance
   from A to B and it was 15 cm. Then, she picked another point on
   the line next to B and labelled it C. When she measured the
   distance from B to C it was 8 cm. What is the distance from A to
   C? Think before you answer. Drawing a picture may be helpful.
EXERCISE II 
   Eddie is standing on a table that is 90 cm tall.
   When Luisa measured from the floor to the top of Eddie's head,
   the length was 204 cm. How tall is Eddie? Later, Monica measured
   the distance from the floor to the top of Eddie's head and the
   distance was 90 cm. How can you explain this? 
EXERCISE III
   Pattie got on a scale to weigh herself. She scale showed 85 lbs.
   She got off and then on again and the scale showed 91 lbs. how
   can this be explained?
