Name: MSRI - Mathematical Sciences Research Institute General Information
Home Page URL: http://www.msri.org/
Brief Description: Offers programs, conferences, library facilities, preprints. Many net sources of mathematics information linked to these pages: general, math departments, other organizations, math servers, newsgroups, computer tools. MSRI sustains a large flow of mathematical scientists from many institutions, averaging about 80 in residence at any given time. During a typical year, MSRI hosts around 300 visitors for periods of a week to a year, and 700 - 800 more attend workshops of 3 - 5 days. MSRI generally has two main scientific programs at a time, along with a group of individuals drawn from the rest of the mathematical sciences.
Stated purpose: The mission of MSRI is to advance the mathematical sciences in three main ways:
- As a center for research. Top scientists carry out mathematical research and interact with their colleagues in an environment conducive to advancement of the field.
- As a center for postdoctoral education. Every year, we award 20 or more postdoctoral fellowships, and provide an environment where our postdoctoral fellows can grow as mathematicians.
- As a center of and for the mathematical science community. We help connect mathematical scientists from many different places and institutions to each other. We are embarking on initiatives to further the profession in areas beyond research, such as educational reform, the computer revolution, enriching public understanding of mathematics, assisting important groups of people to be drawn into mathematics, improving communication between mathematicians and other scientists, etc.
Sponsoring/Funding Institution: MSRI's main operation grant comes from the National Science Foundation.
Persons Involved: Contact inquiries@msri.org.
Groups and levels they aim to serve: Primarily the mathematical research community, with outreach to educators at all levels, industry, the mathematically aware public, and scientists in other disciplines.
