Brief Description: The Northwest Mathematics Interaction is sponsoring a Woodrow Wilson Workshop and Academic Year Program in Geometry and Visual Mathematics.
Stated purpose:
The Northwest Math Interaction (NWMI) is an effort of the Continuing Outreach Program of the IAS /Park City Mathematics Institute. The PCMI sponsors a summer institute in Park City, Utah for teachers, university mathematicians and undergraduates.
The NWMI is made up of Puget Sound secondary teachers who have completed the two-year geometry program at Park City and who are introducing new ways of teaching geometry in the classroom. The NWMI is sponsored by the University of Washington Mathematics Department, which provides some mathematical and technical support.
The Woodrow Wilson Foundation sponsors summer programs for teachers in Princeton, New Jersey. From the teachers in the summer programs, some teachers are picked for teams which lead the outreach TORCH workshops. The Woodrow Wilson Geometry Team which will be teaching at the NWMI workshop is a dynamic group with a great deal of experience in leading workshops.

What Do They Do?
The NWMI Geometry program begins with the summer workshop but continues throughout the academic year 1995-96. Participation in this program of support will help carry the excitement from the workshop to the classroom.
- Participating teachers will form local teams and meet to share experiences and strategies with colleagues from their own or nearby schools.
- Support, communication and resources will be available over the Internet.
- The local teams can draw on the whole group if they wish to organize in-service activities in their schools.
- The whole group of NWMI teachers will share experiences at two general meetings, one in the fall and one in the spring.
- It is expected that some of the 1995-96 NWMI participants will continue as leaders for the 1996-97 NWMI program.
