Tool: Probability/Statistics Object Library Review
Teacher Review (Based on classroom experience)
Reviewer: Craig, Feb 9 2005 10:28PM
Classroom use in Courses and Topics:
Probability & Statistics: Data and Distributions, Samples and Experiments, Probability, Inference
Duration of classroom use:
Multiple Weeks
What did students learn?
A variety of probability and statistics concepts
What did students do with the resource?
Explore probability distributions, collect data, make inferences
How hard was it for students to use?
Easy
Appropriate for:
introduction to a concept, practice of skills and understandings, applications of a concept or technique, advanced investigations
Other Comments:
The applets included in this tool work fine as "stand alone" tools (give students the url and turn them loose), or, for html writers, you can download the java files and build your own lesson around one or more tools--design your own investigation, embed the tool right in the investigation.
What math does one need to know to use the resource?
As a teacher, know what you want to accomplish... tools are fairly self-explanatory (often including mathematical descriptions), but they are often fairly high-level.
What hardware expertise does one need to learn to use the resource?
None
What extra things must be done to make it work?
I had to download a MathML reader to make this tool run. If you embed applets in your own files, your files will be fine on any java-capable machine.
How hard was it for you to learn?
Very Easy
Explanation:
I have worked with html before, so downloading and embedding tools was no problem. Simply using the tools catalogued at this site doesn't require any html programming skills.
Ability to meet my goals:
Very Effective
