Tool: Plinko: Probability from a TV Game Review
Teacher Review (Based on classroom experience)
Reviewer: Craig, Jul 18 2005 2:44PM
Classroom use in Courses and Topics:
Probability & Statistics: Data and Distributions, Samples and Experiments, Probability
Duration of classroom use:
One Class
What did students learn?
Students were introduced to expected value, conditional probability, and the law of large numbers with this applet.
What did students do with the resource?
First, students used the single-play demonstration to see how the game works, then they played the hundred-play game to build distribution tables and explore questions about expected value and conditional probability.
How hard was it for students to use?
Very Easy
Other classroom comments:
Students really enjoy this applet... one student built a real Plinko board to play with, but it wasn't as useful as the applet!
Appropriate for:
introduction to a concept, practice of skills and understandings
Other Comments:
I used a series of questions, and collected data from the whole class, to introduce ideas of expected value and conditional probability (What is the probability of landing in Slot E given you start in Slot H?)
What math does one need to know to use the resource?
Ideas and vocabulary of basic probability.
What hardware expertise does one need to learn to use the resource?
None
What extra things must be done to make it work?
Nothing
How hard was it for you to learn?
Easy
Explanation:
Some browsers will "wrap" the display strangely, so that not all rows of the board are on the same line, but the applet still works correctly.
Ability to meet my goals:
Effective
