This tool reminded me of one we did on our C&I 336 class one day, except this
deals with variables and solving for x.
I think it depicts what you want to do when you're solving algebraic equations
very well. I think students always struggle with knowing what to do with both
sides. With this applet, they can see what subtracting certain things from each
side will result in. It's important to teach them that adding "negates"
subtracting and the same with multiplication and division.
All in all, I really like this tool. In my future classroom, if I do not have
access to a computer, I can definitely use the balance scale analogy as an
explanation tool.
