In my experience, the TI 84 are better for the science classes, and the TI89 are
better for the math classes.  The TI 84 have special features like the periodic
table built in, so they help more in that area.  However, the 89 can do
integration and derivatives which is very applicable in upper level math.  The
84 is much more user-friendly, but if you can figure the 89 out, it can do a
lot more.  It's your call.
