Hi Gary,

You may find the two-digit multiplication activities from our NSF-sponsored
Dynamic Number project web site useful:

http://dynamicnumber.org/activities?topic []=18

These two activities begin with a virtual tens-block array model, and can be
particularly useful in developing a conceptual understanding of why the standard
algorithm works. They are free to download and use, and require either Sketchpad
(on a desktop or laptop computer) or an iPad with Sketchpad Explorer (free from
the App Store).

--Scott Steketee

P.S. The dynamicnumber.org site contains 70 activities from grade 2 through
early algebra, all related to making number concepts easy to manipulate and
investigate.
